Trainers & Jockeys

Current trainers who have already won a Grand National:

Gordon Elliot - 2007, 2018 and 2019 (also 6th in 2016, 2nd in 2017 and 3rd in 2018)
Lucinda Russell - 2017
Mouse Morris - 2016
Oliver Sherwood - 2015
Dr Richard Newland - 2014
Sue Smith - 2013
Paul Nicholls - 2012 (also 2nd in 2005, 3rd in 2009, 4th in 2010)
Donald McCain - 2011 (also 6th in 2008 and 6th in 2012)
Jonjo O'Neill - 2010 (also 2nd in 2004, 3rd in 2005, 3rd in 2006, 3rd in 2011, 2nd in 2012)
Venetia Williams - 2009
David Pipe - 2008 (also 2nd in 2009)
Willie Mullins - 2005 (also 2nd in 2006, 3rd in 2008, 6th in 2010, 6th in 2011, 2nd in 2018 and 3rd in 2019)
Nigel Twiston Davies - 2003 & 1998 (also 5th in 1996, 3rd in 1997, 6th in 2003, 5th in 2010, 4th in 2017)
Ted Walsh - 2000 (also 4th in 2011 and 3rd in 2012)
Kim Bailey - 1990 (also 4th in 1992, 7th in 1995 and 2nd in 2016)

Paul Nicholls finally broke his Grand National hoodoo in 2012. Prior to this he had no wins from 52 runners - and only 25% of his horses completed the race. However, he has also saddled three placed horses; Royal Auclair (2nd in 2005), My Will (3rd in 2009) and Big Fella Thanks (4th in 2010), as well as the 5th placed Rocky Creek in 2014.

Nicky Henderson is another leading trainer who has yet to win the race, although he has come close three times with Zongalero (2nd in 1979), The Tsarevich (2nd in 1987) and Brown Windsor (4th in 1990). However, 18 of his last 22 runners have failed to get round, with 11 fallers or unseated and four pulled up. Liberthine is the closest he has come in the past two decades, finishing fifth in 2007.

While Jonjo O'Neill had an awful record in the race as a jockey (he never completed the course in eight rides, falling four times, pulled up three times and unseated rider once!), his record as a trainer is superb (one win, two 2nd and three 3rd places, as well as a fifth placed horse in Shutthefrontdoor in 2015) - and he came very close to adding a second victory with Sunnyhillboy in 2012.

The recent record of Evan Williams should get a worthy mention too, as he saddled one of the placed horses in each of the five Grand Nationals between 2009 and 2013 (three years in succession with State of Play and then the following two years with Cappa Bleu).  In 2017 Lucinda Russell became the first Scottish based trainer to win the National since Rubstic in 1979, but there have been no Welsh based winners since 1905!

Philip Hobbs has also been knocking on the door, with two seconds in the race (including Balthazar King in 2015). He has also won both the Topham and Foxhunters over the National fences at the same meeting, so knows what it takes to win over the famous birch obstacles.

Lucinda Russell (One For Arthur in 2017), Venetia Williams (Mon Mome in 2009) and Jenny Pitman (twice, with Corbiere in 1983 and Royal Athlete in 1995) are the only three women to have trained a Grand National winner.

When it comes to the Grand National, horsemen like to keep it in the family!  Tommy Carberry saddled Bobbyjo to success in 1999, with son Paul on board, 24 years after riding L'Escargot to victory himself.  A year later Ted Walsh trained Papillon to win, with his son Ruby in the saddle.

Both David Pipe (Comply or Die) and Donald McCain (Ballabriggs) also followed in the footsteps of their famous fathers, matching the training feats of Martin and Ginger by training the winner of the Grand National in 2008 and 2011 respectively.

Jockeys still riding that have already won a Grand National:

Davy Russell - 2018 & 2019
Derek Fox - 2017
David Mullins - 2016 (also 2nd in 2018)
Leighton Aspell - 2014 and 2015
Daryl Jacob - 2012 (also 4th in 2007 and 6th in 2016)
Liam Treadwell - 2009 (also 3rd in 2015)
Robbie Power - 2007 (also 4th in 2016)

Ruby Walsh is the most successful jockey in the recent history of the race, with two wins (on Papillon and Hedgehunter), a second, a third and two fourths. He completed the Grand National course on all bar three of his 13 rides – and has also won the Irish (twice), Scottish and Welsh Nationals.  Katie Walsh, sister to Ruby, became the first female jockey to ride a horse to finish placed in the Grand National in 2012, achieving third on board Seabass for her father Ted.
